MP Geagea Receives Threats after Rejecting Attacks against President

Lebanese Forces MP Strida Geagea said Monday that she received threats on her mobile, calling on security agencies to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Geagea “received a series of phone calls issuing different threats against her on Sunday and today (Monday),” her press office said in a statement.

“This is not the first time that such threats are made against MP Geagea,” it said, adding that the first time was before the formation of the new cabinet and during the time a suspicious drone flew over her residence in Maarab.

The calls and the overflights stopped when the government of Premier Tammam Salam was formed, it said.

But the threats renewed when on Sunday she clearly voiced her backing to President Michel Suleiman against Hizbullah's rhetoric.

The president said Friday that Lebanese parties should not hold onto inflexible equations that hinder the adoption of the new government's policy statement.

His remark drew a sharp retort from Hizbullah, which said the president needed “specialized care.”

“MP Geagea began receiving phone calls from unknown numbers threatening her and making insults against her,” her press office said.

The lawmaker, who is the wife of LF leader Samir Geagea, hoped the security and judicial agencies would follow up on the “dangerous case,” urging them to take the appropriate measures to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Such threats won't affect her principles and her stances from patriotic causes, the statement added.
