Change and Reform Calls for Devising Plan to Rescue Arsal, Bekaa Towns

The Change and Reform bloc stated on Tuesday that it has proposed a number of plans to tackle the situation in Arsal and other Bekaa towns.

MP Ibrahim Kanaan said after the bloc's weekly meeting: “The plans seek to rescue Arsal and the Bekaa towns from the ongoing flow of Syrian refugees and gunmen.”

The army and security forces will play a role in implementing the plan, he added.

This therefore entails that they be properly equipped in order to allow them to protect the people, explained the lawmaker.

Commenting on the drafting of a government policy statement, Kanaan stressed: “We seek to build upon this agreement by paving the way to staging the presidential elections and tackling the people's daily concerns.”

“We hope that the appropriate security and administrative measures are taken to stage the elections,” he remarked.

Tensions have been high in Arsal after the Syrian regime, backed by Hizbullah fighters, seized control of the nearby Syrian region of Yabrud over the weekend.

Syrian rebels have been fleeing into Arsal, a Sunni town, and have vowed to avenge the fall of Yabrud.

Al-Labweh, a Shiite town that supports Hizbullah, has been coming under almost daily attacks by Syrian rebels or fighters supporting them.

Arsal and its outskirts have also continuously come under air raids by Syrian government warplanes, which over the weekend chased the fleeing rebels into Lebanon.
