U.N. Security Council Says Presidential Elections Local Lebanese Affair

The United Nations Security Council held a meeting to discuss the implementation of resolution 1701 that ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbullah and the upcoming presidential elections in Lebanon.

The meeting, which was held in the form of closed-door consultations, stressed the need to stage the upcoming presidential elections, An Nahar newspaper reported on Thursday.

“The presidential elections is a pure Lebanese affair that no other country, including Syria, could have a role in it,” the newspaper quoted attendees as saying.

The Security Council meeting stressed the need of electing a “Lebanese president within the constitutional deadline.”

President Michel Suleiman's six-year term ends in May but the Constitution states that the parliament should start meeting March 25 to elect a new head of state.

Several contenders from the rival March 8 and 14 camps are expected to run for presidency.
