General Prosecutor Saeed Mirza confirmed on Monday that the two suspects accused of smuggling weapons from Lebanon to Syria through Beirut Marina were released, As Safir newspaper reported.
Mirza told the daily that “interrogations with them by the army intelligence and the military prosecutor general didn’t prove the allegations.”
The military prosecutor general charged two weeks ago two Lebanese men with allegedly smuggling weapons from the Beirut Marina to Syria.
Mirza noted that there’s no such case known as “weapons smuggling from Beirut Marina.”
“Even the army intelligence has no such thing,” he added.
As Safir reported on Friday that the suspects have been directed to the military court, and then were transferred to al-Qobbeh prison in Tripoli.
Lebanon's largest company real estate developer, Solidere, issued a statement after the allegations of smuggling arms saying “the Lebanese security authorities are the only sides entitled with the preservation of security, inspection and monitoring at the Beirut Marina.”
The company, which was founded by former Premier Rafik Hariri in 1994 to rebuild downtown Beirut, denied its knowledge or link to any operation of arms smuggling from the facility.
