Syrian President Bashar Assad sacked on Monday the governor for the key northwestern province of Aleppo, Ali Mansour, state-run news agency SANA said.
Assad issued a decree to replace Mansour with Mwafak Ibrahim Khallouf as governor of Aleppo.
No reason was given for the sacking.
While the opposition has yet to bring out the middle and upper middle classes in Damascus and Aleppo, the two economic powerhouses, protests have been building in Aleppo. Four people were killed there Friday as security forces attacked protesters.
On Saturday, U.S. President Barack Obama, Saudi King Abdullah and Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron called for an "immediate" end to the Syrian government's deadly crackdown.
The violence has killed around 2,200 people, including some 400 members of the security forces, according to rights activists. Syrian authorities have blamed the bloodshed on armed gangs and Islamist militants.
The U.N. Security Council is due to hold a special meeting on Thursday to discuss human rights and the humanitarian emergency in Syria.
