Berri to Discuss Israeli 'Bullying' with UNIFIL Chief

Speaker Nabih Berri has said that he would discuss with the commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Maj.-Gen. Paolo Serra, alleged Israeli violations of the U.N.-drawn Blue Line in the South.

Israel suddenly claimed that the Blue Line passes in the middle of Wazzani river and that the owners of resorts there can't clean part of the river, Berri told As Safir daily in remarks published on Tuesday.

The Jewish state also banned swimming there after it claimed its control over that side of the river, he said.

“All the river is Lebanese and there are projects on its banks that have cost millions of dollars,” Berri stressed.

“The Israeli claims that the Blue Line divides it (the river) into two are not true. I will discuss the issue with the UNIFIL chief soon,” he said.

“We will challenge this Israeli bullying if it continues to impose the situation” on us, the speaker, who is also the head of the Amal movement that is allied with Hizbullah, said.

The speaker also expressed surprise at another Israeli claim that the Blue Line crosses through the well of the town of Blida and that the residents can't use its waters.

He wondered how “certain parties in Lebanon insist on considering the resistance a problem and ask for its disarmament at a time when Israel continues to violate our sovereignty and rights.”

“What would have happened had the resistance not existed?” Berri asked.

“The presidential elections should not distract us from confronting the danger of the Israeli violations,” he said.
