Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel criticized on Monday the government’s conduct, pointing out the contradictory positions adopted by some of its members and accusing it of neglecting its duties.
He noted Prime Minister Najib Miqati’s announcement of his commitment to international agreements and justice, while other sides declared that no one will be able to apprehend suspects wanted by international law.
He made his statements in reference to Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s announcement that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will never be able to apprehend party members accused of being involved in the assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri.
“Where is this government taking us?” wondered Gemayel during a ceremony inaugurating a Phalange party building in Hamana.
“Who should we believe?” he asked.
“Should we listen to official position or that of the de facto powers?” he continued.
“Rest assured that we will confront anything that harms Lebanon’s sovereignty … the country can only be saved through reactivating its institutions,” he said.
On the STL, he remarked: “We are not seeking to achieve vengeance from the tribunal, but we want it to establish a safe future for Lebanon.”
“The tribunal is aimed at revealing the truth … we cannot maintain the country through lies and mistrust among its people,” Gemayel stressed.
“Whoever has another means besides the STL to uncover the truth should come forward with it,” he stated.
