A suspect died in detention in the northern city of Tripoli's Abi Samra police station as the Internal Security Forces said that the cause of death was from drugs overdose.
According to a communique issued by the ISF command: “At 2:00 am on Saturday Intelligence Bureau members detained in Qabr al-Zeina in Abi Samra 22-year-old M. R. over an arrest warrant issued by the army against him on charges of carrying out robbery operations at gunpoint.”
A knife was seized in his possession.
The statement, which was issued on Sunday midnight, said that the felon was handed over to Abi Samra police station where he was referred to Tripoli's Justice Palace at 12:00 pm for questioning.
“When the suspect entered the interrogation room his health deteriorate and investigators noted that his health was unstable... He was swiftly submitted into al-Mazloum hospital by the Lebanese Red Cross but he shortly passed away.”
The ISF statement pointed out that an offender, who shared the same jail cell with the suspect, testified that he informed him that he had consumed a bottle of Benzhexol drug during his arrest so that he wouldn't be charged with trafficking.
Two forensic doctors were tasked with examining the body and blood and urine samples were taken to carry out the necessary tests to determine the death reason.
“No violence or torture marks were found,” the statement added.
