3 Syrians Arrested in Bekaa for Belonging to Extremist Group

Security forces in the central Bekaa region arrested a number of Syrians for belonging to an armed extremist group, reported the National News Agency on Saturday.

It said that state security forces arrested three Syrians, identifying them as Aa.H., H.H., and A.Aa.

They were also accused of posting their organization's symbol in various locations.

The security forces also charged them with spreading the teachings of the organization.

The name of the group was not disclosed and the suspects have since been referred to the concerned judiciary.

Several people have been charged in recent months with belonging to extremist groups, sparking fears of the spread of these organizations to Lebanon.

The Internal Security Forces and army have carried out earlier this year a security plan in the Bekaa to crackdown on wanted gunmen and various suspects.

The army was engaged between August 2 and 7 in clashes with Islamist militants in the northeastern border town of Arsal.

Several soldiers were killed and wounded in the unrest, but the gunmen have since withdrawn from the town.
