U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated Scotland Friday on its "full and energetic exercise of democracy," as he welcomed the result of its historic referendum rejecting independence from the United Kingdom.
"We have no closer ally than the United Kingdom, and we look forward to continuing our strong and special relationship with all the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as we address the challenges facing the world today," Obama said in a statement.
A record number of voters turned out for Thursday's historic poll to vote to remain part of the United Kingdom, with the 'No' vote securing 55.30 percent, against 44.70 percent for the pro-independence "Yes" camp.
Washington applauded the peaceful vote, and commended Scotland for its "passionate" turnout.
"Through debate, discussion, and passionate yet peaceful deliberations, they reminded the world of Scotland's enormous contributions to the UK and the world," Obama said.
