A large quantity of arms and explosive ammunition was found on Friday evening near the house of General Security chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim in the southern town of Kawthariyat al-Siyyad.
“Members of the General Security intelligence department in the South discovered a large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosive material that were packed in nylon bags and distributed in three areas near rocks, in the vicinity of … Ibrahim's house in Kawthariyat al-Siyyad,” state-run National News Agency reported.
It said the bags were buried there around ten days ago.
“The General Security informed the army's Engineering Corps and Military Police, whose members transferred the explosive material and arms to an army post in the South as a probe got underway to identify those who buried them in the region,” NNA added.
It said the bags used are made of “reinforced nylon that can prevent the penetration of rainwater.”
“Quantities of the TNT material, hand grenades, a timer, electronic boards, ammunition and bullets” were found inside the bags, according to the agency.
It said State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr tasked the army's Intelligence Directorate to conduct the necessary investigations to identify the perpetrators.
NNA noted that the General Security had recently busted “a cell comprising Syrian members, who confessed to plotting to attack Maj. Gen. Ibrahim during his visits to his house in the southern town of Kawthariyat al-Siyyad.”
