A detainee held by the Army Intelligence confessed during investigations to his role during the August clashes in the northeastern border town of Arsal between the army and Islamists from Syria, reported As Safir newspaper on Saturday.
Ibrahim Bohloq confessed that he belongs to the Islamic State jihadist group, adding that he killed Colonel Noureddine al-Jamal.
He revealed that he led a group of 65 gunmen that attacked an army post at Arsal's technical school during the clashes.
The fighting broke out after the army arrested a prominent member of the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Nusra Front in August.
The Islamists from the IS and al-Nusra Front groups overran the town and the clashes ensued with the army.
A ceasefire was eventually reached with the militants withdrawing from the area.
They abducted with them however a number of soldiers and policemen.
Three have since been executed, a few were released, while the rest remain held.
