A ministerial committee tasked with regulating Lebanon’s electricity sector is now facing the difficult mission of introducing amendments to Law 462 after it found several ambiguities in it.
Prime Minister Najib Miqati chaired the meeting on Tuesday. Members of the committee agreed to study superfluous points in the law and raise them at the next meeting set for Oct. 10.
Energy Minister Jebran Bassil, who is a committee member, said in remarks published by An Nahar daily on Wednesday that the current law could not be implemented and requires a lot of amendments.
Asked if the article on the establishment of a regulatory authority is among the changes needed, he confirmed and said other amendments are also necessary.
“This is not limited to one point for the law to be implementable,” Bassil said.
The implementation of Bassil’s $1.2 billion project is linked to the amendment of Law 462 as stipulated by the government decision taken on Sept. 7.
