Army Defuses Grenade and Home-Made Bomb in Tripoli

A Lebanese army expert dismantled on Friday a hand grenade and a home-made bomb in the northern city of Tripoli, the military announced.

The grenade and bomb were discovered by an army patrol in a empty water bottle in Tripoli's al-Amercan neighborhood, it said in a communique.

The bomb was produced from 500 grams of explosives and was linked along with the grenade to a fuse, the communique added.

On Wednesday, a Lebanese military expert was killed and two others were wounded when a bomb they were about to dismantle near the northeastern border town of Arsal exploded.

The explosion came a day after an ambush by militants in Ras Baalbek killed six soldiers and wounded one.

Troops have been battling Syria-based militants, including the extremist Islamic State group and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, in areas near the border.

In August, the jihadists seized soldiers and policemen during a cross-border raid on Arsal. The extremists have already killed three of the captives, beheading two of them.

Soldiers have also lately engaged in deadly gunbattles with Lebanese extremists in northern Lebanon.

Jihadi recruitment in impoverished areas of the North is on the rise, and black IS flags fly freely in some areas, reflecting pockets of growing support for the radical group.
