Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on Sunday said “Hizbullah’s arms won’t be a problem anymore if we lay out a (national) defense strategy.”
In an interview with Radio Orient, Charbel added that Lebanon could benefit from these weapons within the framework of such a strategy.
“If you want to remove Hizbullah’s arms, you have two choices: force or consensus. Should it be taken away by force, a problem will erupt in Lebanon, that’s why we should discuss the issue around the dialogue table, in line with President Michel Suleiman’s call,” the minister noted.
“I will oppose the Resistance’s arms if I feel that the Lebanese army has become properly equipped, and if we manage to provide it with all the ammunition and weapons needed to protect all the Lebanese,” Charbel stressed.
Separately, the minister said Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea’s latest remarks on the security situation in the country contained “a lot of exaggeration,” noting that “political division is behind all the remarks we’re hearing nowadays.”
