Girl Disappears in North, Family Holds Two People

A teenage girl, who had been missing for the past two days, was handed over to security forces in northern Lebanon, the state-run News Agency reported Wednesday.

A man identified as Mashhour D., who was kidnapped by the girl's family in retaliation, was also in the custody of the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch, it said.

According to the agency, Fatima left her school in the town of Fnaideq in Akkar district along with another 18-year-old girl on Monday.

Members of her family lured Mashhour D. and abducted him along with another man after claiming they were behind the disappearance of the girl, NNA said.

The relatives then informed security forces that the fate of the men was linked to the return of the girl to her family.

Police are now investigating the case, the agency added.

It is not clear if the girl disappeared because she intended to get married. Child marriage already exists, particularly in the rural areas of Akkar and the eastern Bekaa Valley.
