German New Car Sales up in 2014

New car registrations in Germany, a key measure of demand in one of the most important sectors of Europe's top economy, rose in 2014, partly reversing two previous years of declines, the VDA industry federation said Monday.

A total of 3.037 million new cars were registered year, an increase of 3.0 percent over the figure for 2013, VDA said in a statement.

In December alone, the number of new registrations jumped by 7.0 percent to 229,700 cars, it added.

"The results of 2014 are slightly better than expected, but no cause for celebration," said VDA president Matthias Wissmann.

"Given that overall economic conditions were actually quite good, private demand for new cars could have been higher," Wissmann said.

German-made brands accounted for nearly 75 percent of all new car registrations in Germany last year, the VDA data showed.

A total 5.623 million cars rolled off German production lines in the whole of 2014, an increase of 3.0 percent year-on-year.

The number of new cars exported rose by 2.0 percent to 4.299 million.
