Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi reiterated calls on politicians to elect a new head of state, denouncing the prolonged vacuum at the Baabda Palace.
“We pray to have politicians who believe in state institutions and the presidency,” al-Rahi said during Sunday's sermon at Bkirki.
The patriarch reiterated calls on lawmakers to to head to the parliament and carry out their duty by electing a new president who sets the interests of the people as a priority.
Al-Rahi considered the president as the only one capable of safeguarding the constitution and the people.
The rivalry between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces has led to a lack of quorum in 16 electoral sessions in parliament, amid a boycott by the MPs of FPM chief MP Michel Aoun and Hizbullah.
The presidential seat has been vacant since president Michel Suleiman's term ended on May 25.
