Franjieh: Assad’s Assessment of Situation Helped Save our Arab Identity

Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh praised on Friday Syrian President Bashar Assad’s perseverance in the face of adversity, crediting him for maintaining the region’s Arab identity.

He said: “Assad successfully assessed the situation in the region and we can credit the Syrian regime’s perseverance for protecting our Arab identity.”

“We are banking on the Syrian regime’s secularism,” he stressed.

“Assad was right to have faith in his people and army,” the MP continued.

Furthermore, he noted that a regional and international conspiracy is seeking to topple the Syrian regime “through all possible means.”

Addressing Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi’s concerns over the fate of Christians in the region, Franjieh commented: “He is speaking of the Christians’ fears in his role as patriarch.”

“His positions stem from his conscience and convictions and he has not been ordered to issue them,” the Marada Movement leader noted.

On the selection of an electoral law, he said: “We will support what the patriarch deems as appropriate seeing as he is the unifier of Christians and Lebanese.”

A few weeks ago, al-Rahi had voiced fears during his trip to France of the ascension of extremists to power in Syria should the regime be toppled.

Such a change could threaten the presence of Christians in the region, he added.

He also said that Assad should be given more time to implement reform.
