Young Egyptian Woman Killed as Islamists Protest

A young woman was killed in Egypt Friday as Islamist supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi protested ahead of the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising that toppled his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

The 18-year-old was killed by birdshot in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and her mother wounded during a demonstration after Friday prayers, a security official said.

Thirty other protesters were arrested, the official said.

Morsi was ousted by then army chief and now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2013 after millions protested against his one year rule.

His backers regularly attempt anti-government protests on Fridays that often end in violence.

Egypt's first freely elected president, Morsi succeeded Mubarak, who was forced from office after an 18-day uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011.

Since Morsi's ouster, the authorities have cracked down on his supporters, killing hundreds in street clashes, and jailing thousands more.

Morsi and several members of the now-blacklisted Brotherhood are facing trials on various charges punishable by death.
