Premier Najib Miqati held talks on Tuesday with a delegation from the General Labor Confederation which has stressed that it holds onto its demand to raise wages by at least 50 percent to reach LL750,000.
If a solution with the authorities is not reached by Oct. 12, the GLC will go ahead with its plan to hold a nation-wide strike that will bring the country’s economic sector to a standstill.
It is calling for more than doubling the minimum wage, from LL500,000 to LL1,250,000.
The price index committee, which is headed by Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas, held its second meeting on Monday. The minister hoped that it would reach a solution with the labor unions ahead of Oct. 12.
A source told al-Markazia news agency that the committee might approve to raise the minimum wage to LL750,000.
The committee will hold another meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
