Gemayel: We Fear Syrian Army Being Granted New Opportunities in Lebanon

Phalange Party leader Amin Gemayel slammed on Wednesday the infiltration of the Syrian army into Lebanese territory in the Arsal region on Tuesday, describing as a “very dangerous” development.

He said after meeting the Czech and Egyptian ambassadors to Lebanon: “We fear that the Syrian army is being granted new opportunities in Lebanon.”

He stressed that United Nations Security Council 1559, which was agreed upon by Lebanon and Syria, stipulates that the Syrian army should withdraw from Lebanon, “So what is the meaning of its return to Lebanon?”

“Tuesday’s events are a dangerous violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and for now, we will not ask the Lebanese government to file a complaint to the U.N. Security Council over this matter,” Gemayel said.

“The government is obligated to offer an explanation to the Lebanese people over what happened, but what are the measures it has taken so far?” he wondered.

“The Syrian ambassador to Lebanon should be summoned in order to explain his country’s actions,” he stressed.

“We will not remain silent over this matter and the public must be informed of all its details,” Gemayel added.

On Tuesday, Syrian tanks crossed the Lebanese border and headed towards the region of Arsal in the Bekaa where they fired at an abandoned battery factory.

They also attacked the house of two Lebanese citizens, Zahri and Abdel Aziz al-Jabawi.
