Head of the Mustaqbal bloc MP Fouad Saniora stressed on Saturday the need to respect the constitution and avoid violating, while rejecting the “approval of new practices that would create confusion at cabinet.”
He said during a seminar in the southern city of Sidon: “Such measures have already rendered the government incapable of exercising its duties towards the citizens.”
“We should adhere to the constitution and avoid new practices that we may regret in the future,” he said.
Saniora explained that the constitution stipulates how the cabinet should take decisions in the presence of a president and in his absence.
A debate has been raging among the political blocs over the government mechanism in light of the ongoing vacuum in the presidency.
Lebanon has been without a president since May when the term of Michel Suleiman ended.
“The real solution to the government mechanism problem lies in electing a president,” continued Saniora.
“The vacuum is eating away at Lebanon and the authority of the state,” he warned.
Moreover, it is hindering its economy and ability to confront challenges, especially given the regional developments.
“Lebanon is exposed because of the presidential vacuum and the cabinet's inability to exercise its role soundly,” he noted.
The former premier then accused the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizbullah of “exerting pressure on the Lebanese to avoid the election of a president,” adding that they are benefiting from the vacuum.
