March 14 Committee Prepares Political Document, National Council

The committee setting the stage for the 10th anniversary of the March 14 alliance's formation has been been holding meetings over the National Council that it aims to launch, An Nahar daily reported on Friday.

The newspaper said that the committee, which is headed by al-Mustaqbal bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora, held several meetings in the past two days.

It is also expected to hold more talks over the weekend to discuss a political document that will be adopted during the 10th anniversary ceremony whose venue hasn't been set yet.

The committee members will also hold talks on the National Council that the March 14 coalition's general-secretariat aims to launch at the ceremony.

The general-secretariat has handed over the alliance's parties and members copies of the council's by-laws and expects to receive their comments during a workshop it will hold on Friday, said An Nahar.

The council's job would be to monitor the policies of the March 14 alliance through a working mechanism that includes the announcement of a manifest and political statements every three to four months.

The council would also organize workshops and events in parallel to the functions of the March 14 general-secretariat.

The coalition was established in March 2005 in the aftermath of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

His murder led to the rise of the Cedar Revolution or Independence Intifada.
