Part of their vision to establish a healthy and educated community, cancer patient support groups announced at the UNESCO Palace winners of their ‘Know to Beat’ competition, a press release said on Wednesday.
Under the patronage of the Ministries of Education and Public Health and with the support of Roche Lebanon and SGBL, the program targeted high school students to increase education and awareness on cancer.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, participating schools and members of the press.
‘Know to beat’ was launched in October 2014 by Faire Face, May Jalad Foundation, Lebanese Breast Cancer Association and One wig Stand. The competition targeted 18 high schools in Beirut asking them to develop a creative awareness campaign on one of five cancers: breast, cervical, lung, skin and testicular.
The projects submitted were assessed by jury of leading professionals from different fields: Oncologists, representatives of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, Public media Figures, a Cancer Survivor and an Art Director.
“Our objective is to influence youth behavior at a very crucial age of their development” said Anne Frangieh founder of Faire Face.
“Know to beat’ extends our mission towards young generation for them to become our ambassadors. We are also grateful for the support received and the level of commitment from participating schools “she added.
This competition was designed to encourage students to learn more about cancer and prevention methods by conducting their own research, interviewing specialists and developing campaign materials to spread awareness to their community.
Abed Al Rahman Sabra, Country Manager of Roche Lebanon, stressed on the role of the private sector in spreading healthcare education: “Supporting awareness campaigns among youth stems from Roche’s philanthropy in making a positive change in its community. We are pleased to be able to team up with the patient support groups to encourage early awareness, because early detection can save lives.”
Mrs. Noha Abou Saad, Director of Strategy and Marketing at SGBL stated: “Ever committed to society, SGBL is here to contribute to economic and social progress. We wished to participate in the "Know to Beat" project aiming to raise awareness among school students around cancer as we strongly believe that involving the youth in such programs at an early stage is essential”.
The Award Ceremony included an exhibition of all campaigns from the participating schools.
