Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Daryan warned that the world is facing a crisis caused by terrorism and extremism, stressing that the Islamic State group gas committed crimes not linked to Islam.
“The world is now in a real crisis as a result of the spread of terrorism and extremism in the name of Islam, which tarnished the image of Islam and Muslims,” Daryan told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat in remarks published Friday.
“This situation should compel the religious leaders of the Islamic nation to show that Islam is a religion of tolerance,” he said.
He praised the Ulemas for carrying out their role, but warned that the evil could be stronger.
“The religious leaders should unite … It is our main duty to protect our youth and generations against resorting to extremist thoughts,” Daryan said.
Thousands of young Arabs have gone to Iraq, Syria and Libya to fight in jihadist ranks, raising fears of battle-hardened militants returning home to plot attacks.
The IS has lately seized control of at least two cities along Libya's long Mediterranean coastline and has a strong presence in several others, its first major expansion from its base in Syria and Iraq.
In a sign of the group's reach, it claimed responsibility on Thursday for a deadly attack a day earlier on a museum in Tunisia.
