Opposition to Hold Meeting to Soothe Christians in East

The March 14-led opposition is preparing for a “general national conference” next month in the light of the results achieved by the “Lady of the Mountain” gathering scheduled for Oct. 23, An Nahar newspaper reported on Friday.

The conference will determine a broad vision on the upcoming stage in Lebanon and the region.

Sources told the daily that al-Mustaqbal bloc leader Fouad Saniora expressed “enthusiasm” over the conference that is aimed at stressing on the important role Christians play in the East amid the Arab uprisings that will affect Lebanon.

They noted that the meeting will also determine the position towards the cabinet led by PM Najib Miqati, reiterating that its role has “ended.”

The meeting will tackle the opposition’s stances on other national issues, the sources told An Nahar.

The newspaper remarked that the venue of the meeting hasn’t been decided yet, however, the Bristol Hotel might be the place due to its “symbolic” meaning.

The “Lady of the Mountain” meeting that will be held at the Regency Palace Hotel in Adma will be aimed at tackling the Christians’ message in the Middle East and stressing their role in the Arab Spring.

The meeting was originally expected to be held at the Lady of Lebanon monastery, but fears that it would be employed for political purposes prompted the change in venue.
