George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed black teen Trayvon Martin in 2012, was injured Monday in a dispute involving a firearm, officials said.
Police in Lake Mary, Florida, said Zimmerman suffered minor injuries from flying glass after a bullet was fired at a window of his car following an altercation with another man.
"There were just minor injuries," Lake Mary police department spokeswoman Bianca Gillette told a press conference.
She said Zimmerman had flagged down a police officer following the incident.
"He reported that he was just been involved in a shooting," she said.
Separately, a third party also called Lake Mary Police to report the incident on behalf of Matthew Apperson, "a white male who stated that he has just been involved in a shooting with George Zimmerman."
Gillette said police had established that any shots fired had not come from Zimmerman.
"At this time the investigation has proven that George Zimmerman was not the shooter. He was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and since been released," she said.
"We cannot determine at this time whether or not charges will be filed for either party," she added.
Images shown on television showed what appeared to be a bullet hole through the front passenger seat window.
Zimmerman, 31, was a neighborhood watch volunteer in February 2012 when he shot and killed 17-year-old Martin as he walked down the street in a gated community in Sanford, Florida.
He was acquitted of second degree murder in July 2013, setting off protests nationwide over Florida's "stand your ground" gun laws.
He has since had several run-ins with the law.
In January, he was accused of assault by his girlfriend, but she later withdrew the complaint.
In September 2014, he allegedly threatened a man during a road rage incident on a Florida highway, but police released him because the man did not want to press charges.
In 2013, his estranged wife at the time, Shellie Zimmerman, called police to say her husband had threatened her with a gun, but she too failed to press charges.
