LU Professors to Call Off Strike as Cabinet Approves their Demands

The government on Thursday approved a draft law proposed by Education Minister Hassan Diab on increasing the salaries of full-time Lebanese University professors, Information Minister Walid al-Daouq announced after a cabinet meeting.

The president of the League of Lebanese University Professors Charbel Kfoury told the daily An Nahar in remarks published on Friday: “In principle, we should be able to congratulate the Lebanese University and its professors on the achievement.”

The league is expected to hold a meeting later on Friday to address the government’s decision, call off the Lebanese University strike, and announce the beginning of the academic year, which should start on Monday.

As Safir newspaper reported on Friday that the League will visit Speaker Nabih Berri on Friday, “who contributed greatly in ending the dispute over the university.”

Media reports said Thursday that Diab had struck an agreement with the league of LU professors to reach a “logical settlement” on its demands.

The agreement includes raising professors’ salaries to LL3.7 million, the reports said.
