Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea criticized on Tuesday the state's failure to resolve the country's trash disposal crisis, wondering why Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb's plan has not been implemented yet.
He asked during a press conference: “Why haven't we implemented the plan if it has garnered the approval of the majority of sides?”
“It may not be the best proposal, but it is the best we have to work with at the moment,” he remarked.
“How is it that a state authority has to acquire the permission of everyone in order to take any step?” asked Geagea after the plan was met by refusals by various municipalities that oppose the dumping of waste in their regions.
He therefore urged Prime Minister Tammam Salam and the concerned officials to implement the plan “as soon as possible because the situation has become unbearable.”
Lebanon has been suffering from a trash disposal crisis since July with the closure of the Naameh landfill.
Politicians have failed to find an alternative to the landfill, resulting in the pile up of garbage on the streets of the country.
The heavy rain on Sunday brought with it flooded streets coupled with waste, as experts warned of the health and environmental impact of the crisis.
