Venezuela's Maduro Vows to Respect Election Results
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro vowed Tuesday to respect the results of legislative elections on December 6, which opinion polls show the opposition stands to win.
"The results... will be the holy gospel to me, whoever wins, at the local level, in the state and in the country," Maduro said.
He added that Venezuela's electoral system is "the most perfect, best protected and most transparent anywhere."
Mired in recession, chronic shortages and soaring inflation, Venezuela is heading into its most competitive legislative polls in recent memory.
Maduro's leftist movement risks losing for the first time since his late mentor Hugo Chavez came to power in 1999.
The socialist leader was speaking at a governors' council at the presidential palace. Participants at the event included Henrique Capriles, the opposition leader whom Maduro narrowly defeated in presidential elections in 2013, after Chavez's death.
Maduro pointedly said that "all of us" must respect the election results, after the opposition refused to sign a pledge to accept the outcome no matter what.
