Saudi Arabia Executes Murderer

Saudi Arabia on Monday put to death a man convicted of murder, following its weekend executions of 47 men including a Shiite cleric whose death prompted a diplomatic row with Iran.

Ahmed Obeid al-Amri al-Harbi was found guilty of shooting a man dead following a dispute, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

He was executed in the Qassim province, north of Riyadh, it said.

On Saturday, 47 men were executed in 12 different Saudi cities, including militants linked to al-Qaida.

They also included leading Shiite activist and cleric Nimr al-Nimr, whose execution caused outrage among Shiites in the region.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday cut diplomatic ties with Iran after protesters stormed the kingdom's embassy in Tehran and set it on fire.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia executed 153 people convicted of various crimes, including drug trafficking, up from 87 in 2014, according to AFP tallies.

Amnesty International says the number of executions in Saudi Arabia in 2015 was the highest for two decades.
