The head of the Mustaqbal bloc MP Fouad Saniora is preparing to file a lawsuit against the head of the Finance and Budget Committee MP Ibrahim Kanaan, revealed al-Liwaa newspaper on Tuesday.
The former prime minister had accused the MP of being ignorant of financial affairs.
On Monday, March 14 camp MPs withdrew from the parliamentary Finance and Budget Committee meeting over accusations Change and Reform bloc MP Kanaan directed against Saniora.
Meanwhile, Mustaqbal bloc MP Ahmed Fatfat told the newspaper that he supports the ongoing boycott of the committee, saying that he will discuss with his colleagues the future steps they may take in this matter while waiting for the other camp’s response to their boycott.
“The important thing is to respect the institutions without being victims of the parliament speaker or the head of the committee’s shifty positions in interpreting parliamentary and legal norms,” he added.
Mustaqbal bloc MP Jamal al-Jarrah reiterated Fatfat’s position, stating that his bloc is keen on the functioning of parliamentary committees, but stressed that the boycott will continue until Kanaan issues an apology.
“We refuse the defamation of our camp without damming evidence,” he said.
The March 14 MPs refused to return to the committee before Kanaan apologized to Saniora over accusations that he had stolen funds from the state treasury and budget.
Jarrah accused Kanaan of spreading lies about Saniora, saying that his claims are baseless and lack objectivity.
“We don’t have the honor of taking part in a committee headed by someone whose sole concern is misleading the public,” he added.
He said that the Change and Reform MP was abusing his position as head of the committee in order to achieve political goals.
