U.S. President Barack Obama stressed to President Michel Suleiman that the United States stands by the Lebanese people in their pursuit for justice, while French President Nicolas Sarkozy emphasized the need for Lebanon to commit to its international obligations, especially the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
Obama told Suleiman in a cable congratulating him on Lebanon’s Independence Day that the United States will continue its support for Lebanon’s independence and sovereignty, reported the National News Agency on Wednesday.
He added that he looks forward to cooperating with Lebanon in order to help it reach a democratic and secure future.
For his part, Sarkozy stressed to Suleiman France’s complete support for Lebanon’s unity, security, and independence.
At the time that the Arab world is going through historic changes, Lebanon should continue on presenting an example of openness and mutual respect between its various sects, he said in a cable to Suleiman also congratulating him on Lebanon’s independence.
The French President therefore urged Lebanon to commit to its international commitments towards the United Nations, especially those on the STL.
