Hizbullah Says Made No Pledge not to Retaliate against Israel

Hizbullah has slammed as “baseless” reports alleging that the party has pledged not to retaliate against Israeli strikes that hit inside Syria, LBCI reported Friday.

“Media reports quoted Israeli enemy alleging that Hizbullah made a pledge to Russia not to respond to Israeli airstrikes inside Syria...are baseless and unfounded,” Hizbullah media office said in a statement on Friday.

On Wednesday, several Israeli missiles struck near the Mazzeh airbase outside Damascus without causing any casualties.

The Jewish state has sought to limit its involvement in the five-year conflict in Syria, but has carried out sporadic sorties against Hizbullah inside Syria.

Israel's Channel 10 had reported later that “Russia has received pledges from Hizbullah and Iran not to respond to Israeli strikes that hit targets inside Syria.”

Several thousand Hizbullah fighters are fighting alongside President Bashar Assad's forces across war-torn Syria.

The party argues that its intervention in Syria, which is controversial in Lebanon, is necessary to protect the Lebanese from the threats posed by extremist jihadist groups such as Islamic State and al-Nusra Front.
