President Michel Suleiman criticized on Friday the labeling of constitutional institutions with sectarian descriptions, reported As Safir newspaper on Saturday.
He said, according to his visitors: “I will not take sides in any sectarian dispute in Lebanon.”
He emphasized the importance of dialogue in solving various disputes, stressing the need to resume national dialogue unconditionally.
Furthermore, the president stated that the dialogue should discuss all issues of concern.
On this note, Suleiman revealed that meetings will be held among prominent political officials as part of efforts to restart the dialogue.
In a separate development, the president had sent a message to his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy in which he renewed his condemnation of the attack against the French troops in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on December 9, reported al-Liwaa newspaper on Saturday.
“The attack targeted the troops of a friendly nation whose people and government have long supported Lebanon, the South in particular,” he continued.
“Such terrorist attacks are not only directed against France, but the entire international force and Lebanon as well,” he stated.
Suleiman voiced Lebanon’s determination to uncover the perpetrators, revealing that the army had bolstered its cooperation with UNIFIL to this end and to avert future assaults.
Seven people, including five French soldiers, were wounded in the attack against UNIFIL in the southern city of Tyre.
