Beirut MPs to Discuss ‘Arms-Free City’ on Monday

Beirut MPs are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting at the parliament on Monday to discuss the latest armed clashes that took place in the capital, An Nahar daily reported.

The newspaper said Sunday that the lawmakers will meet at 1:00 pm “to discuss the different aspects” of the clashes.

It quoted Beirut deputies as saying that making the capital arms free will be at the center of discussions.

The issue was discussed several months ago between officials but they had not reached any decision.

"Today’s circumstances necessitate that such a demand is met," the sources said, saying "the authorities should assume their responsibilities away from procrastination no matter what the reasons are."

The Lebanese army said Friday that several people were arrested after an armed clash between Amal and Hizbullah supporters in the area of Zaidaniyeh-Aisha Bakkar left one person injured.

The gunfight erupted over an argument on a parking space.

Other such incidents have also taken place in Beirut lately.
