UK Slams Syria Bombings, Says Must Not Hinder Arab Efforts

Britain said on Friday suicide bombings in Syria that killed at least 40 people must not undermine an Arab League plan aimed at ending the bloodshed.

"I condemn the bomb attacks in central Damascus today and regret the loss of life and injury I have heard reported," said Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt in a statement.

"It remains vital that the commitments made by the Syrian authorities to the Arab League are followed through fully and rapidly," he added.

These included allowing "free unfettered access for Arab League monitors and the media to document the situation on the ground," Burt said.

Syria in November endorsed an Arab plan aimed at ending the bloodshed amid a months-long insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The attacks on two security service bases came as an advance team made preparations for the arrival of Arab League observers as part of the plan.

Assad's regime blamed al-Qaida for the attacks but the opposition pointed the finger at the regime itself.
