Hizbullah Blames U.S. for Damascus 'Terrorist' Blast

Hizbullah on Friday accused the United States of being behind a bombing in Damascus which official Syrian media said killed 25 people and wounded dozens more, describing Washington as a "terrorist."

"This terrorist crime targeting the heart of the Syrian capital is the second installment of a plan by the evil force, the United States, to punish Syria for standing by the Resistance against the Zionist enemy," a statement by the group said.

It said the bombings aimed to compensate for Washington's "humiliating withdrawal" from Iraq.

Hizbullah also blamed the United States for twin bombings which left more than 40 people dead in Damascus on December 23. Syrian officials blamed al-Qaida.

Friday's explosion struck in a heavily populated neighborhood near a school in the historic Midan quarter of the city. Syrian state television said the blast was the work of a suicide bomber.

The United Nations estimates that more than 5,000 people have been killed in Syria since the crisis erupted last March.

Iran- and Syria-backed Hizbullah has staunchly stood by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad throughout the crisis.
