U.N. chief Antonio Guterres met Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar on Friday, an official from the strongman's forces said, a day after his fighters launched an offensive against the capital Tripoli.
The official from the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army did not give further details of the meeting, which took place in the eastern city of Benghazi.
It came hours after the United Nations secretary-general tweeted his aim to "avoid a military confrontation" in Libya.
