Saniora: Aoun’s Call for Protests is an Insult to Lebanese

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora slammed Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun on Sunday for calling on people to demonstrate against severe electricity rationing.

“What FPM chief Michel Aoun said lately is an insult to all the Lebanese,” Saniora told delegations from Sidon visiting him at his office in al-Hlaliyeh.

He accused Aoun of rushing to the aid of his son-in-law Energy Minister Jebran Bassil who had promised in vain to improve the electricity crisis in the country.

Saniora also accused Bassil of rejecting to approve the funding of electricity projects by Arab and international funds.

Aoun urged all the Lebanese who pay their electricity bills on Tuesday to participate in a peaceful demonstration against rationing.

Bassil has come under attack recently and residents of several areas have blocked roads after most parts of the country faced severe power outages. But the energy minister and his FPM have accused certain parties inside the government of hindering the implementation of his projects.

The FPM chief’s call for protests came after the decline in the number of his supporters, Saniora said, adding that “he maybe resorted to this method to mobilize more” followers.

Saniora described the Syrian National Council’s call for a new chapter in the complex and often-troubled relationship with Lebanon as a “historic and important” stance.

The Council’s statement sought to clarify the nature of the ties between the two countries, which should be based on the respect for Lebanon’s border, sovereignty and democratic system, the MP said.
