The Mustaqbal bloc noted on Tuesday that Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui’s withholding of telecom data from the security authorities exposes the people to several dangers.
It said after its weekly meeting: “We hold Sehnaoui, his political backer Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, and the government accountable for the current situation in Lebanon where the state’s sovereignty has been compromised.”
“The FPM’s actions regarding the telecom data are a form of extortion and an attempt to cover up the Change and Reform bloc ministers’ failure,” it said.
Addressing Aoun’s press conference on Friday in which he vehemently attacked the political class in Lebanon and accused it of conspiring against the Change and Reform bloc ministers, the Mustaqbal bloc said: “The insults to the Lebanese people are a sign of the unprecedented tensions the bloc leadership is experiencing.”
“Aoun insulted all the Lebanese, starting with the president, prime minister, speaker, and lawmakers in order to issue random accusations against friends and foes, even going so far as to target martyrs and officials who have survived assassination attempts,” it said, describing the Change and Reform bloc as the corruption and destruction movement.
Information obtained by the ISF Intelligence Branch on the alleged plot to assassinate high-ranking security officials, including its chief Col. Wissam al-Hassan, stirred the debate over the legality of providing security authorities with the telecom data to track phone communications.
