Prime Minister Najib Miqati will call for a Cabinet session in the upcoming hours, MP Ali Darwish, a member of Miqati’s bloc, said.
Darwish told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, in remarks published Friday, that he sees positivity after President Michel Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri and Miqati agreed on an extraordinary legislative session on Wednesday.
“The Cabinet session would be dedicated to discussing the 2022 draft state budget and other urgent files,” Darwish said, adding that “it will help to ease the tension in the country.”
Darwish went on to say that the state budget will be “realistic” and will echo the exchange rate.
“The budget will underline the dramatic decrease in state revenues and will outline how the government will finance public expenditure. It will also include reform articles,” Darwish revealed.
The International Monetary Fund demands that Lebanon carry out fundamental reforms for an agreement to be reached.
The first official meeting with the IMF would take place on January 15. The visiting IMF delegation will review the progress the government has made, and may return in early February to finalize a deal.
