The Ministry of Economy will issue today, Tuesday, a new price for the bread bundle, Economy Minister Amin Salam said.
"There is neither a bread crisis nor a flour crisis," according to Salam, who told al-Jadeed TV that the new price will be "fair" and the dollar differences will be taken into account.
Meanwhile, head of Bakeries Syndicate Ali Ibrahim affirmed that a quantity of 50 thousand tons of flour is available and sufficient for a month.
He said the new price for a bread bundle of 800 grams to 820 grams may reach at least LBP 10,000 in the bakeries.
Citizens were flocking Tuesday to bakeries to buy large quantities of bread, for fear of flour shortage while the USD exchange rate continued to rise.
Ibrahim had warned yesterday that "bread will only be sold in bakeries, and will not be distributed to shops, due to a decline in flour quantities.”
He said he feared a “fabricated” bread crisis that will line up people in queues until they accept lifting subsidies on bread, comparing the situation to the fuel subsidies scenario and stressing that “bread is a red line.”
