Ex-PM Fouad Saniora on Wednesday called on the Sunni community in Lebanon to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections, despite ex-PM Saad Hariri’s decision to boycott the vote along with his al-Mustaqbal Movement.
At a press conference, Saniora stressed the importance of “engaging in the elections by all Lebanese, especially Sunni Muslims who believe in Lebanon’s sovereignty.”
He accordingly called on them not to boycott the polls and to “participate actively, both in terms of nominations and voting.”
Saniora added that “the State cannot be rebuilt as long as Hizbullah continues to control this state through the force of its weapons, but the party cannot be eliminated from the national equation.”
“If Hizbullah remains in its current state, there will be no possibility for the State to regain its free decision and rebuild itself nor for Lebanon to be able to establish constructive ties with the brotherly and friendly nations,” the ex-PM warned.
He added that all of Lebanon’s woes are “the result of Iran’s hegemony over it.”
