Report: Mikati won't call Baabda to request meeting

Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati has “put aside his ‘designate’ label and is currently using the caretaker PM label until he receives the phone call he was promised with two weeks ago by the presidential palace,” informed sources said.

“Two days have passed since the PM-designate returned from his vacation and the meeting (with President Michel Aoun) is yet to happen,” al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The sources told the daily that “Mikati has not changed his stance and will not take initiative to call Baabda to request a meeting.”

“He had lodged a draft cabinet line-up with President Aoun, who did not discuss it with him but rather handed him over suggestions without an exchange of opinions,” the sources added.

“Mikati accordingly considers that the ball is in the president’s court. If he wants to discuss the line-up, he is ready, and if not, the current government is functioning and the circumstances do not withstand arrogance nor maneuvers,” the sources went on to say.
