Suleiman Calls for Supporting Army to Avert Repercussions of Syrian Crisis on Lebanon

President Michel Suleiman praised on Wednesday the role of the army in maintaining the civil peace and protecting the citizens, reported the National News Agency.

He called on the people to support the army in order to avert any possible repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon.

He made his statements in light of the criticism that was directed against the deployment of the army in the northern region of Wadi Khaled after media outlets reported that members of the Free Syrian Army were present in the area.

The March 14-led opposition said that the deployment was made at Syrian orders.

Suleiman had held talks with the head of army intelligence Brigadier General Edmond Fadel on the security measures taken by the army and the need to protect the country’s southern borders.

“Controlling the border and border-crossings falls within the army jurisdiction that was granted to it by the government and which enjoys complete political backing,” said Fadel.
