Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said Tuesday that he would visit the northern port city of Tripoli in the next few days to inspect the army units and security forces deployed there following the deadly clashes between two rival neighborhoods.
In remarks to al-Liwaa daily, Charbel also said that he would visit lawmakers, officials and clergymen in the capital of the North.
He stressed that the situation in the city is calm and that there would be more stability in the coming days.
At least three people were killed during two-days of clashes that erupted on Friday between gunmen from the neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
Bab al-Tabbaneh is mainly Sunni while Jabal Mohsen’s residents belong to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s Alawite sect. The gunbattles were a clear indication on how the violence in Syria is enflaming emotions in Lebanon.
The fighting ended Saturday afternoon after the Tripoli lawmakers agreed to a ceasefire.
The army has arrested several people involved in the fighting and seized arms during raids it carried out in the two districts.
