Mikati urges against score-settling in Cabinet, postpones army chief debate

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Thursday said that his government is continuing to shoulder its responsibilities amid the dire conditions in Lebanon and the region.

“With national pride, we stress that together we are continuing to shoulder the responsibility of acting in caretaker capacity, facilitating people’s affairs, protecting the country and immunizing state institutions. Against the backdrop of the Gaza war and tragedies, we raise our voice to announce that the scenes of blood and killing will not manage to kill the rights,” Mikati said during a Cabinet session.

“Anyhow, any decision that it will take regarding any impending juncture will be based on the country’s interest and the priority of immunizing institutions in this critical period,” Mikati said, referring to the issue of extending the term of Army Commander General Joseph Aoun.

“The government will certainly not be an arena used by those who want to settle personal scores and fight personal conflicts at the expense of the public interest,” Mikati emphasized.

LBCI television meanwhile said that Mikati requested that the debate over the army chief be postponed pending further discussions, especially in terms of a legal study that the secretary-general of the Council of Ministers is preparing.

Caretaker Telecommunications Minister Johnny Korm meanwhile announced that Cabinet has renewed the contract of LibanPost indefinitely, pending the hiring of a new company.

“I have not threatened to suspend my membership in the Cabinet, but I have been disappointed with the result that we have reached,” Korm clarified.

“I had repeatedly said that I don’t want the renewal of LibanPost’s term and that the contract with it is unfair for the state,” the minister noted.
