Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Monday stressed that the election of a president in Lebanon should not be linked to the raging war in Gaza.
“The failure to elect a president and the use of weak excuses are unacceptable,” al-Rahi said in his New Year’s Day Mass sermon.
“We have recently heard that some are saying that a permanent ceasefire in Gaza is a precondition for the election of a president … This is something that is deplorable and totally unacceptable,” al-Rahi added, referring to media reports.
“We reiterate that it is parliament’s duty -- if it is self-governing -- to convene and elect a president, seeing as the candidates are known and excellent,” the patriarch went on to say.
